Why Organic?

Wednesday, 18. October 2006 14:52

I recently read an article that talked about the popularity of organic products. The demand has gone up so significantly that some companies are scrambling to make sure there are enough organic foods available. The article caused me to think, “Why organic?”

For most people, removing chemicals and hormones from the environment and the food supply is seen as a real plus. But why don’t people want to eat chemicals and hormones? The fear is that these toxins and pollutants will negatively affect the body. These chemicals could decrease the body’s ability to adapt and perform and lead to a decrease in health. I think this is a very reasonable conclusion and some people feel very strongly about it and others not so much. I imagine the vast majority of folks would prefer to consume food without these unnatural additions. However, many people do not eat organic. Why not? Availability, time, money, education, tradition, priorities, etcetera.

I see a great parallel to chiropractic in all of this (of course). Subluxations are similar to an environmental toxin or pollutant. They interfere with the nervous system, disrupting its normal function, reducing adaptability and performance and decreasing health. The vast majority of people would prefer to live without nerve interference from subluxations, however some feel very strongly about this and others not so much. Why aren’t more people receiving the benefit of living subluxation free? Availability, time, money, education, tradition, priorities etcetera. While organic food has become more available, cheaper, easier to find and a higher priority for many, chiropractic, for most people, has not become more affordable, more available or less time consuming.

The public’s demand for organic is really changing the food industry. I believe similarly, a higher demand for chiropractors who want to help people live subluxation free and who actually run their offices to meet this demand will benefit the public and the chiropractic profession. We can change the demand and hopefully change a profession for the better. Maybe you have talked to someone about an organic product recently. Have you talked to anyone about chiropractic recently?
